[ The sound of chirping crickets has become the usual chorus for Tristan's posts, but today there's an added hoot of an owl ]

Alright. Fine, fine- You know what, Yvaine? I give up.

I GIVE UP.

[ Oh look, he's scared away all the birds from the trees again. ]

I've been wandering around bloody forest for nearly a month now. A month! I've searched for you in every nook and cranny— through the City proper, the beach, that park. I would have nearly trekked up that mountain if I hadn't decided to be sensible for once.

I know you don't want to be found. And yes, you have- you have a valid reason, but at least- At least-

At least tell me you're all right? Please.

[ A gap of silence - a few minutes of it, to be exact. ]

I just want to go home. I never- I never wanted this type of adventure, I mean- I've never even been out of Wall! It doesn't help that I've spent almost the entire time in this stinking- [ the sound of a thump as he kicks a tree] bloody forest.

And of course the City wants to rub it in my face! Let's bring in two men that look like your Father and put them right in front of you so you won't forget.

"Chaining up a woman, what would your father think?"

"Oh, look! It's not-you-father. Doesn't that make you think of home? By the way, how's Victoria doing- Wait, I forgot you're stuck in this City!"

I just-

[ a frustrated sigh, followed by another thump as he abuses the tree once more. Sadly, he ends up hurting himself rather than the trunk of the tree.]

...Ow.

In that case, I think I'll insist you come to the Warehouse, rather than simply offering.

[ The offer is far to tempting and considering that Rosella is extraordinarily sweet...]

...Alright, Rosella.

Though I warn you, I really do resemble some sort of forest animal.

As long as you're the friendly variety of forest animal, I don't foresee any problems.

Can you find your way on your own, or would you prefer I send directions?

I'm certainly nothing like a lion, if that's what you mean.

And directions would definitely be helpful. I- I get lost a lot ... sometimes

Some lions can be rather friendly, I've found. I think it depends on the lion.

All right, then. If you'll just give me some indication of where you are at the moment, I'll tell you the quickest way to get here.

Lions are supposed to be vicious creatures. I heard- I heard they can even rip a man apart.

Well, there's a tree next to me with a hole that looks like an old man's face ... and a rock that's got lot of dimples and cracks. About a yard down there's also small stream.

I can get to that fountain and you can guide me from there?

They could. I've been a lion before--well, a lioness, actually, but all the same--and I wouldn't doubt it for a minute.

...Er, yes, guiding you from the fountain would be considerably easier, I think. And in the meantime, I'll get a bed and towels ready for you.

Curse, hopefully right?

And thank you. I suppose I should wash up as soon as I can, rather than ... make you bear the stench of a forest human.

Mmhmm, it was a curse. And I've been a parrot thanks to a curse, as well, and a frog without one. And next will be an eagle-- But the frog was through magic, so.

Of course, you're very welcome.

I'm sincerely hoping that I remain human during my time here. I ... I wouldn't want to be cow or lizard or some sort of bug...

Was it by a witch?

Well, no, those don't sound very pleasant at all, it's true. But sometimes it's rather fun to be an animal, if you end up as a good one.

And no, it was by a prince, actually. Er, sort of. I met a frog that was actually a prince, and when I broke the enchantment he was under, he gave me the crown he'd been wearing as a frog--which, it turns out, had the ability to change its wearer into a frog at will, just by putting it on and taking it off. And giving it to me was the only good thing he did for me, too, the twit.

If you were turned into an animal, would you think like that animal? Or like a human?

...Sounds like something out of a fairytale. A- A sort of twisted fairytale, though ... aren't the princes supposed to save the princesses? Rather than turning them into frogs.

I've always managed to stay thinking like a person, when it's happened to me. But it did come with the instincts, I suppose--when I was a bird, it didn't take me long to learn to fly, and I knew how to hunt when I was a lioness, even though I didn't put those particular skills to any real use.

They're supposed to not be rude, awful twits, either, but that certainly didn't stop this one. And, um. Quite a few things are like fairy tales where I come from, yes.

Still wouldn't want to become an animal, even an interesting animal. I'm very much content in my own body.

Arriving in the City was a sort of fairytale in itself. A twisted fairytale but ... certainly nothing you'd ever expect.

No, certainly not. I can't imagine anyone expecting a place like this at all. Sometimes it all seems a bit like a dream, but then, I'm sure I could never dream up half the things I've seen here, either.
